A Journey to Massage, Spa, Health and Wellness
By Eunice
yunesa@yahoo.com

It was in the early months of 2000. I have been coughing for the past one month but have no signs and symptoms of having tuberculosis or pneumonia aside from consistent cough and a painful back. I just returned to my position working as a travel and timeshare sales and marketing executive for the past three years and I was thinking that maybe it was due to the very cold temperature inside the hotel. Everyday it was like winter inside the presentation area and because all of our directors were Westerners, we were stuck in a position where all of us have to adjust to their preferences in temperature and corporate culture. I can no longer ignore what I was feeling so I went straight to a pulmonologist and decided to submit myself to an examination. Medical history was taken and the specialist decided to have my sputum and X-ray checked just in case. Both results were normal except that I have dextro-scoliosis for which the pulmonologist referred me to another specialist- this time an orthopedic doctor who told me that my condition cannot be helped any other means except by surgery. Feeling dismayed that medicine cannot help me with my condition, I sought also the help of my friend who was a physical/occupational therapist and yes, she verified that the only solution to scoliosis is surgery. But I can also help myself not to make it worse, she said. She gave me exercise movements to be done everyday so my condition will not worsen. So, reluctantly I have accepted my condition. While I was searching online for a cure, I found that massage can alleviate symptoms so I have tried it and it helped ease my back pains. So, I started to look at massage therapy in a different context, I started to look for alternative medicine as a career. I was not able to find a medical degree leading to a doctorate in Alternative Medicine but I found out that there is such thing as Licensure for Massage Therapist. This was my first step in my journey to massage, spa, beauty, health and wellness. From that time forth, the rest was history.

Two years thereafter, I have been feeling weak and sick. I am having difficulty breathing whenever I walk or come up and down the stairs. Even if it’s just some light work, I get tired easily. I feel fatigued almost all of the time, I have chest pains and shortness of breath. Being someone from the medical background, I sought medical help immediately. The internal medical physician told me to seek the professional help of a cardiologist. I thought to myself, “why a cardiologist? I thought it was my lungs again?” Even if I was not convinced, I still heeded his advise and went to a cardiologist who asked me to undergo an echocardiogram (ECG) and some running test. The result? I have MVP or Mitral Valve Prolapse in my heart (to be specific it was in the Posterior Mitral Valve leaflet). I read again the results, I have MVP or Mitral Valve Prolapse. What again? MVP? Most Valuable Player? Like in basketball? Hehehe…. What is that? ano kamo? I must have been asleep or absent when that was taught in school because I cannot find it within the recesses of my stock knowledge. So I asked the cardiologist to please explain my condition. He said that I have a condition in my heart also known as “click murmur syndrome” and “Barlow’s syndrome”. This is the most common heart valve abnormality, affecting five to ten percent of the world population. I thought,” yeah right Doc, you are just saying that to pacify me.” So where did I contract it, where did I get it from? Is it a disease? An infection? He said “the Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) syndrome has a strong hereditary tendency, although the exact cause is unknown. It is seen most commonly in women from 20 to 40 years old, but also occurs in men”. By this time, I am already correlating data in my mind from my previous medical history and was wondering “My dextroscoliosis is idiopathic (meaning of unknown cause) and now another condition, MVP is also of unknown origin?” Again, the cardiologist said, there are no cure for it except if I went ahead and do surgery, which is not really necessary, he said. As it’s not really a cure. Since my MVP condition was a classic one because I have mitral regurgitation, he told me to not to stress myself too much especially physically and not to worry too much. There is no cure.

To make matters worse (or should I say better?), when I searched online about MVP complications, it includes in rare circumstances—cardiac arrest, usually resulting in sudden death. Ahhh, at least a prayer of mine has been answered because I asked the Lord not to make my death long and hard. Hehehe…..anyway, I just kept on praying and hoping for the best. You may feel that it’s morbid to think about death, but actually it’s more unhealthy to live in denial of death and what will inevitably happen in the future. We need to think more of eternity, not less.

In 2007, I was also diagnosed to have endometrial polyp and intramural myoma (both are said to be abnormal growths) to which the gynecologist told me the only solution are two ways: conceive a baby or undergo sugery. Again, both of these do not promise that it will not grow again. By this time, I am already aware of some alternative and complementary therapies so I sought the help of one Meetup member who is a doctor but also into complementary medicine. No other than Dra. Naomi. She explained to me that my condition was very easy to cure. She gave me a lifestyle check including food: what to eat and what not to eat. That time I was still eating red meat but slowly getting off of it. So, I decided to take her advise seriously.

You know, when you are faced with death on your face, you get to evaluate you life and your lifestyle. I was then reminded by God to cling to him. I remember the time that God and I made a pact, this was a long time ago that once I get to accomplish what He (God) has entrusted me to do on Earth (whatever that is) I am free to go. He is free to take me home. Since the time that I accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, I do not fear death. My only request to God was: I do not like to suffer- it should not be a violent death or a long hard death. But, we do not get to choose when and where our birth and death will be. All we can do is ask God to grant our prayers. Well, after being given the advise from the doctor that they cannot do anything and there is no real cure for my condition (again). This time, I decided to undergo surgery but I have to give other ways a try. “If these trials (the complementary therapies) will not work after three months, I will go under the knife” I said to msyself.

During that time, I have gotten into self-reflection. It’s ironic because I only slow down when I am faced with life threatening illness or danger or physical ailment. Ewan ko ba lagi akong parang nagmamadali…hahaha….kahit sa mall my sister would always remind me ano ka ba ateng? we need to stroll and walk not pace fast. Most of the time naman, I get so caught up with work and other things to do that I am always in a hurry. At other times, I forget eating because I am so engrossed with work. Yes, at times for the whole day when I have an activity, dinner na ako makakakain. I was also reminded by God to slow down. As I read Psalms 46:10, it said, “be still and know that I am God”. Ouch! There I am again noh? Being reminded by God to take things slow and not to forget Him even in our daily lives not only on Sundays. During those times, as we were also talking with Dra. Naomi she said that prayer is also very powerful and there were scientific researches which showed that whenever you pray for something especially food that you are about to take, it energizes the molecules of food thereby giving you more boost and healing along the way. So I also started a prayer vigil for my healing. After three months of extensive health diet and lifestyle conditioning- and boy! It’s hard….really hard because I have to have the discipline to really eat only this much, eat only this, do only this and not do that. My body was complaining because it is not used to a “really” healthy lifestyle and when I started out this new lifestyle, my diet was all raw and vegan. As if I have cancer. I ate raw food and a lot of seaweeds! Only fruits for a start and vegetables but nothing with face on it. Eh di siyempre, yung katawan ko manghihina the first few days pa lang. I was trembling because of hunger as I was used to carbohydrate based food. But after I got my system in check, detoxified myself, a week thereafter, my body started to move in directions that my mind wants it to go. Since then I have not indulged in red meat particulary pork- sabi nga nila naging muslim na daw ako. But then again, come to think of it, they have a point not to eat pork because it’s really not healthy, it poisons our body. Pork is very hard to digest and assimilate. So, after three months, to be able to finally confirm if my new lifestyle was effective, I have to go back to my gynecologist and have myself checked again. This time, during the ultrasound while the gynecologist was looking for the myoma- she was saying, “bakit nawala? Anong ginawa mo?” after an extensive search, the gynecologist gave up and said “nothing” and my results where normal. Thank God. It was a miracle. God used Meetup for me to meet people like Dr. Naomi, encouragements and prayers from my friends, family and Ted, diet and lifestyle to heal me.

But my story will not end here, remember I have dextroscoliosis and the doctor said also there is no cure? I went to this fire and heat therapy (one of the indigenous therapies that we went to for our Meetups) and had three (I think) sessions with Tatay Tony and to my surpise, my backaches have really diminished. For this, I would like to thank Mr. Ramon Tan, the owner of Carica who introduced me to Tatay Tony when he found out that I have scoliosis. To this day, I have not had too much pain on my back not unlike before. This was one of our photos:

Last but not the least, just last month February 24, 2010, I was diagnosed to have nodules and cysts on my mammary glands (in short breasts). Yes, cysts and nodules not just one but four on each sides. Ano ba yan? Ang dami naman tumutubo sa akin? Hehehe……puro pa naman idiopathic……unknown cause. But again, when I was about to undergo aspiration biopsy the surgeon told me to come back again after a month if I felt something abnormal if not I can come back in April for a mammography, just to be sure.

So why am I sharing to you all of these? One, because having to face the reality of death several times, we get to evaluate our lives more than anything else. Life is short. As James 4:14b said, “Our life is like a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes”. Life is not all about career or money and how far we have reached in our fields. Although these are important, these are not permanent. We have to ask ourselves, if God chooses to take me right now, am I prepared? Have we done God’s purpose for our lives? Have we glorified God through our skills, our talents and our abilities? Life is not just a matter of going up the ladder of success in the world’s standards. It is what we have done that impacts eternity and how do we prepare for eternity? Go on a one on one talk with God. Pray. It works. We have to ask God to forgive us and let Him come into our lives and offer our lives to Him as he has given His life for us. When you are in your dying moments, I do not think I will hear you say “bring me my diplomas, I want to look at them one more time or bring me my medals and trophies, my awards and the jewelries that were given to me”. When life on Earth is ending, we do not want to be surrrounded by objects but with people. People we love and cherish. So whenever we wake up everyday should be to make sure that we spend time loving God by loving other people and using whatever talents or skills He has given us to share it with everyone. Do not waste today’s blessings by keeping it with yourself. Give God and people a time and chance into your life.

Two, because whatever our journey is in this field, we all have stories to tell, we have experiences to share and kindness to show. You have something to share, something to contribute and no one in this world is as unique as you. You are created to do more than exist. You are wonderfully made. You are placed on this earth to add more love, give more of ourselves, to add more understanding, more forgiveness and we can do that with our work, our career, our talents, our skills and our abilities. Our money, our career, our life- will come to an end but what we have done for the sake of God will reflect until eternity.

As Russel Kelfer’s poem amptly states:
You are who you are for a reason.

You’re part of an intricate plan.
You’re a precious and perfect unique design,
Called God’s special woman or man.
You look like you look for a reason.
Our God made no mistake.
He knit you together within the womb,
You’re just what he wanted to make.
The parents you had were the ones he chose,
And no matter how you may feel,

They were custom designed with God’s plan in mind,
And they bear the Master’s seal.
No, that trauma you faced was not easy.
And God wept that it hurt you so;

But it was allowed to shape your heart
So that into his likeness you’d grow.
You are who you are for a reason,
You’ve been formed by the Master’s rod.
You are who you are, beloved,
Because there is a God!

Do not just spend your life trying to create success financially and in your career or trying to create a legacy on Earth. It’s not at all bad to want to be remembered when you are gone but ultimately what matters most will not be what others say about your life but what God would say about yours. Realize that all these acheivements will be surpasses by others in the future, records will be broken, reputations fade and tributes forgotten. Do not just live for an Earthly legacy because there is much more than what we see on Earth.

I pray that God will touch you in whatever situation you are right now. Be it in health or in sickness, in success or defeat, up or down- we need God. I also hope that you will come to realize that no religion, no amount of good works will ever replace God’s love for us. He is just a prayer away, He is just waiting for us to come to him and talk to Him with our hearts. All we need to do is ask to come into our lives. “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, it will be opened (James 11:9-10)”.

Do not waste your time, ask God now.

Valentine’s Gift Guide for the Wellness Enthusiast

By

Eunice Estipona
http://www.yunesa.blogspot.com/

When buying a unique and special gift for our loved ones we are using up all our creativity and resources to do so. If money is tight, every peso counts so there is no such thing as “cheap”, if you have really thought about it, no matter what the cost, then that’s what matters. Material gifts are not that only things that you can give so before buying something, listen to clues on what he/she really wants. Instead of the usual chocolates, you can mix and match any two or three of these items depending on your budget. So, here’s a list of gift ideas for wellness enthusiasts.

1. Spa-rties or Spa Parties- contact a Licensed Massage Therapist or a nearby spa and inquire if they can accommodate two people at the same time and if it’s a group date then they should be able to come up with a themed spa party occasion. For a more specialized and less expensive treat and you have space at home, you can host a spa party right at your own home. Just buy some robes and slippers, scented candles, massage oils or manicure and/or pedicure set- call a home spa or home massage service or hire somebody in your neighborhood to give you and your loved one a massage and a foot spa with manicure and pedicure. Compose a romantic poem in a Valentine’s card and insert a spa gift certificate. If he/she loves chocolates, take them to a spa that offers chocolate scrubs and treatments.

2. Wellness Travel- Go out and have fun! If that means, just taking them for a bowling time or a fitness center or perhaps you can take your loved one/s to an organic farm and a healthy culinary tour. Recreate your first date or the time when you told each other the three magical words, “I love you”; Walk, dive or schedule an overnight trip to a romantic resort spa outside of town. Take a trip down a rural area and experience authentic bamboo massage, sea shell massage, Dagdagay or our very own Hilot.

3. Palate Trip- Treat your loved ones for a food trip to a spa gourmet, a vegan restaurant or arrange a cooking time to cook low carb, vegan food and delicacies. Inquire from culinary schools if they offer short classes on vegetarian cuisine and cooking demonstrations then enroll both of you as part of your bonding time. Learn and have fun together learning a new recipe.

4. Delights at home- Dress up your bedroom like a spa with fresh petals of roses on the tub or on the floor, a mini water fountain, lighted aromatherapy candles and a waiting massage therapist to perform massage for both of you. Arrange your ordinary kitchen to look something like a healthy spa nook/kitchen with herbs, gourmet food and green and leafy vegetables on the refrigerator and fresh fruits and edible flowers on the dinner table. Make a healthy midnight snack that you can both devour. Make it as appealing to the sight as can be.

5. Gifts and tokens- Buy foot spa gift set, a pet, a plant like a bonsai, buy seeds for an herb garden or Zen garden containing white sand, etched stones and candles; Vegan cook books, fitness and exercise CD’s/DVD’s, spa music CD’s or relaxing CD’s, instructional books on health and beauty, Gift basket like a Spa kit/Bath basket containing bath towel, aromatherapy oils, massage oils, organic soaps, body scrubs, edible flowers, etc.

All in all, any present whatever the amount is all about thought, attention and love. Appreciate what is there and love them for it!

2010 Trends: Spa, Massage Therapy, Beauty and Wellness

I will be blogging about Spa, Massage Therapy, Beauty and Wellness Trends for 2010. So before I give out what to watch out for in the future regarding these arenas I would like to clarify a few things before I delve into the trends in our industry. I would like to stress that forecasting trends is far from an exact Science because all trends are constantly evolving and as I am writing this blog, both trends listed below are one way or the other, already happening and they are evolving rapidly. I have also included some examples and tips to boost your spa, massage clinic and wellness center business using the trends below.

First and foremost, readers of this blog must make the important distinction between a fad and a trend. What then is the difference between the two? One major difference between a fad and a trend is the duration. The lifespan of a fad is short, fleeting, here today and gone tomorrow. A fad is a statement, a one-hit wonder, something eye-catching that comes and then goes just as quickly. Sandali lang wala na…. It enjoys a few months of unexpected popularity, but disappears just as quickly as it appears. It might be another new massage technique, a new spa offering, a new facial product in the market, etc. Fads create a lot of attention and press, and then they abruptly disappear because people haven’t seen results or they find it too difficult to sustain.

But there is a tendency for a fad to become a trend and if it does it can remain popular for decades and might become a classic. A trend on the other hand, has roots and staying power. It strikes a deeper cord, they are self-sustaining but needs improvement over time and is connected to a larger change in society. It would totally be expected, then, to see the same trends appearing for multiple years in a trends survey. The day spa is one example of a fad becoming a trend which crossed over and have interwoven industries in beauty and wellness.

Some experts agree that the difference between a fad and a trend is the number of industries it affects. A fad often appears in a single industry and rarely crosses over into others. While a trend spans more than one industry and touches more than one market and generation. So if you went to a trade show and you are seeing a certain massage technique or facial product over in many booths, it’s already too late to catch the beginning of that trend.

Another difference between a fad and a trend is the overall industry acceptance. Investing in a fad item can be risky for companies known for setting trends. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between a fad and a trend before the product or service reaches the buying public. Smaller companies often have the flexibility necessary to promote a faddish item, while larger companies tend to wait until the initial smoke clears and a trend can be determined. This difference between a fad and a trend can be seen in the recent fad diet wars. When scientific evidence demonstrated a link between high carbohydrate intake and weight gain, nauuso yung mga fad diet plans. Although the move away from processed foods and carbohydrates soon became a trend, the individual diet plans involved all enjoyed a fleeting popularity. A similar difference between a fad and a trend also appeared in the fitness industry. An emphasis on core exercises and the reduction of abdominal fat became a trend, hindi na puwede yung malalaki ang bilbil therefore a number of faddish exercise devices appeared suddenly on television screens everywhere. Some of these exercise devices were shown to be ineffective or even dangerous for the user, while others became part of the trend towards better health and weight reduction.

One of the telling differences between a fad and a trend is the perception of overall quality. Fad products and items are rarely expected to endure, but trends tend to survive the decade in which they were created.

Example, a spa owner needs to be aware at all times of what is happening in the massage and spa industry. If you are not able to attend trade shows, a quick and easy way to keep up with the latest news is to go to your nearest competitor and take a look at the newest service offerings. Go to malls and check out what other spas are offering. Really examine what products are on the shelves and in the sales circulars. In this way you can take advantage of the trend research that has already been done by professional buyers. You have to study and learn from the brands that you admire and think of them as the mirrors to today’s more diverse, more networked and connected society at pagkatapos nun find ways to outdo them.

Find out what’s new, and then continue monitoring to see what has staying power, and what is on the way out. It is important to keep checking, because the trends and even the classics may eventually evolve and change over time. For example: Look at how traditional Philippine hilot has evolved into wellness hilot. Take note of what are the differences between how it is being practiced in a modern spa versus a “hilot ng probinsiya” and then you can incorporate both. Then your clients will have the best of both worlds.

Distinguishing between trends and fads requires quantitative and qualitative research in addition to gut instinct. Telling the difference between a fad and a trend is a constant balancing act for entrepreneurs. Staying in touch with our clients and testing innovations before making large commitments are to succeed in catching a trend.

The massage industry is constantly exploring new movements and massage modalities while at the same time evolving and improving on massage equipment. Example, yung mga manufacturers and product suppliers ng massage tables and facial beds should avoid designs that are attractive but unsafe or that deliver bio-mechanically incorrect massage movements from both the practitioner and the client. Dapat yung design na pwede kahit anong height ng massage therapist at kahit anong massage modality. Kung meron na nun. Equipment needs to be built with proper biomechanics that encourage proper lower-back support and skeletal alignment.

Second, maraming products in the market especially facial products na mag cla-claim that you will be whiter, have clear complexion, etc. Some even claim that you will stop aging with little work on your part. Sad to say they are all false. Aging cannot be totally stopped because aging is really a part of life. You can at least minimize the effects of aging but you cannot stop it. Also, we have to consider that these products should continually be used. There is no such thing as a magical wand to change you into a beautiful flawless princess overnight. Kahit yung mga case na maiitim na pumuti- it did not happen overnight. Even Glutathione tablets need months to take into effect. Hindi pwede yung mag take ka ng Glutathione minsan lang and then you would expect na next week maputi ka na. It will take time. There is no quick, easy way to get whiter that will show results immediately. Ganun din sa exercise, there is no effective workout that are easy kung gusto mo talagang maging sexy it takes discipline in food intake and exercise. And by the way, not all exercise machines can deliver results.

I am not saying that these are the only trends to track in 2010. There are dozens of important trends worth applying and I am merely bringing you my selection as it affects us in the Philippines because the similarity between fads and trends is that both are driven by changing consumer preferences and desires.

Okay so after we have discussed at length ang fad and trend. Here now are the trends for 2010.

1. Correct! Connect!

Connections. Partnerships. Mergers. Convergence. Consumers in the spa, massage therapy and wellness will experience more and more local to local, local and international businesses coming to join and pair with each other to stay relevant in a diverse world of consumers. There will be more industries na mag me-merge with the spa, beauty and wellness industry. Including fitness, travel and tourism, medical and health, bilogy and environment, culture and experience etc. Which will produce a lot of diversities and collaboration from individuals, companies, etc.

Which brings us to a few sub-trends, where people, services and products are just thumbs and clicks away. Urban (City) population is growing at a phenomenal rate and according to the Global Report on Human Settlements, October 2009: Asia will host 63% of the global urban population or 3.3 billion people in 2050. So where does this leads us? What is the significance? More and more consumers will be sophisticated but will be willing to try-out more daring goods (thereby creating a need for bite size or should I say, appetizer size services in the spa) simplified spa menus, signature and unique experiences and services. This will also in effect have less cookie cutter services which will create less blandness in the relationship between spa enthusiasts and management. More and more services of these spas, massage clinics, beauty and wellness centers will offer their very own signature services, localized and exclusive spa and massage therapies and treatments that will keep clients coming back for more. Therefore your spa, massage clinic or wellness center should sell something special, something premium (in some cases), something desirable in just one (geographical) location. Just be sure that it’s worth the trip.

Since dadami ang tao within cities, online transparency with conversations happening online will be the latest and greatest. These consumers will be lusting for more and more information. Tracking and alerting people online. One example of which is Google latitude where you share your current location with your Google contacts via browser and mobile device. Mas maraming spas ang mag o-offer ng online and via mobile appointments. And if you have not yet used Google Earth then medyo huli ka na, but nevertheless you should try it out. It’s cool. Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. You can explore rich geographical content, save your toured places, and share with others.

Gadgets (including mobile phones and i-pods, etc) will be used to digitalize everything including spa appointments and consumer reviews. More and more blogs will be created for consumer reviews. In short, with people sharing information online, everything we actually do, buy, listen to, attend, try and so on will make it easy for people to find groups and real-time content (as we speak ika nga). It will be a common thing to tap into a live stream of experiences from fellow consumers. Of course, as more people are contributing and reviewing, sa dami ng information available and accessible to all, online access and device convergence will allow more on-the-spot-reviews like Twitter, it has established itself as the real-time snap shot of what people are thinking, feeling and experiencing and reviewing word wide.

So, in 2010, expect numerous services to capitalize on this burgeoning ‘global brain’, and its endless real-time reviews and verdicts.

But do not be fooled, human interaction will still play a big role in an era were online presence is a must. Mass mingling, bonding and mind-sharing will be a common thing. People will get out of their homes and use social media and online groups to spur meeting in flesh and blood. Why? Because people actually enjoy interacting with other warm bodies, and will do so forever. Online relationships and presence will not replace (still) direct human interaction. People are people who needs others to survive and that means getting a part of some offline community. Meetings will be even more impromptu, temporary meet-ups of strangers, people and crowds with similar interests, hobbies, political preferences, causes and grievances. Many of these (temporary) meet-ups will revolve around getting a project done, generating public attention or helping one another.

A breed of consumers and clients na ang hinahanap will be beauty prodoucts that does not only make them beautiful on the outside but on how they feel. So magiging IN yung beauty products na may psychological and well-being benefits that affects people’s moods positively. So if you a beauty product povider make use of textures, temperatures or sounds that affect the mood, as well as innovations, such as makeup that “induces beauty sleep”  producing also a hybrid of beauty and spa products and services.

2. Giving and Sharing is the name of the game.

This is already big in 2009 but will even be bigger in 2010. Consumers will patronize more products and services that give back to the community not only as a good corporate citizen but in order to stay relevant in business a spa, massage clinic or wellness center should champion something. Consumers will be more drawn towards spa, massage clinics and wellness cnetr businesses who values fair trade, ecologically friendly, safe and sound products. Clients/consumers will buy what makes them feel good- good about the ingredients and good about what they are spending. This generosity will be taken to the next level, by initiatives that would make giving and donating painless like using our mobiles and donating online. Just to give you an idea, how you can start this, as a spa, massage clinic and wellness center owner, you can introduce and encourage consumers to volunteer to an organization you support and they can get 50-100% off of your rates. They can just present a letter from the organization they worked for given the number of hours and viola! they would get free services from you. Even Disneyland is already doing this to inspire volunteerism. Disneyland have worked with HandsOn Network to have their volunteer work verified and those who contribute their time will receive a voucher from Disney for a day’s admission to Walt Disney or Disneyland Theme park. You can raise money to donate to spas employees who have been devastated by typhoon Ondoy.

There are several ways to apply these consumer trends, and make some money from the innovations. Just ask yourself if they have the potential to (and if so, how):

1. Influence or shape your company’s vision by re-aligning it with these trends.

2. Fads and trends become integrated into our lives very quickly, and our sales and service quotas will reflect this if we incorporate these items into our lines. So these trends should inspire you to come up with a new business concept, an entirely new venture or a new brand.

Carica Mangosteen Super Blend
and
Noni Juice and Fruit Extract Review
By
Eunice

I don’t know about you but I have not been taking antibiotics for more than five years now simply because my tummy hurts also I found our that antibiotics in the long run produces a lot of side effects. So I might as well try herbal remedies. Since then, to my surprise, naging “hiyang” ako. Although the Department of Health promotes some herbal remedies (Sampung Halamang Gamot when Sen. Flavier was the DOH Secretary that time) and herbal concoctions through its office, The Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care hindi talaga openly na pinapayo ng mga doktor sa mga tao to take herbal medicines mainly due to lack of scientific research but we have heard of testimonials that speak otherwise. Hindi natin na re-realize it just suppresses the symptoms. Anyway, hindi ako nandito to discuss which is right and wrong, it’s ultimately your choice but for me, Science should work hand in hand with nature. Para maka-save ng maraming buhay. I believe that the closer any product is to its natural state mas effective at mas maganda sa katawan.

Since then, I experimented, researched and taken some herbal remedies. Para alam ko mismo which works for me and which doesn’t. Because what might work for Juan might not work for me. Hindi naman ibig sabihin na pag hindi hiyang sa akin eh hindi na effective yun it just so happens na hindi lang talaga effective sa akin pero it might be effective sa iba. Of course, as an informed consumer I would do my own homework before taking anything kasi hindi naman porke herbal and natural eh maganda na sa atin depende pa rin yan sa reaksiyon ng katawan natin sa mga tina-take nating gamot. So for this blog review I will write about two herbal-based products of Carica Herbal Health products, a local manufacturer of herbal and natural food supplements. They have kiosks and branches nationwide from SM malls to Robinsons malls. They are also open for franchise as I know. This company was started by Mr. Ramon Tan, an herbalist and one person that I admire. I personally met him at their Buendia office last year but before that I have been taking Carica herbal products. I am inspired by what he talks about together with the hosts of the program sometimes with Heidi Bernardo Sampang and Pastor Eric Maliuat kasi during the segment Mr. Ramon Tan is always promoting Philippine products and herbs directly sourced dito sa Pilipinas. Biro mo hindi naman kaila sa atin na we are really very very rich in agricultural products pero nag-i-import pa rin tayo ng maraming medicines? What an irony ano po? Noon naitanong ko nga sa aking spa supervisor that time bakit kailangan pa tayong mag import ng mga facial products and massage oils eh ang dami-dami namang raw materials dito sa atin? At ang sabi niya, to this effect, “eh kasi walang tayong advancement in science and technology to harness, develop and process our raw materials while ang ibang bansa meron”. Hummm….There could be some truth in it and I am not sure kung totoo yun or hindi but sad to say, a lot of the spa products especially yung high-end spa products are sourced outside of the Philippines. For high end products, marami diyan gawang France and US yung medyo low-end gawang China. When I say high-end it means yung mga mamahalin at yung low end naman yung medyo mura and presyo.

Anyway, going back to my review, I have tried some of Carica Herbal products and there are only two that I would blog about here. Ito yung Mangosteen Superblend and yung Carica Noni Juice and Fruit Extract. I do not have any comparison to make. Basi is fermented sugar cane branch extract made into local wine called “Basi”. I like the Mangosteen Superblend better kasi it’s more on the sweeter side. I researched din kasi ano ang effect ng Mangosteen and this fruit has shown to have high concentrations of anti-oxidants at very effective anti-aging fruit. Anyway, when I started taking it, I feel better in my tummy (kasi may gastritis ako) pero secret lang natin ha? Maybe subukan ko rin ito…What did I feel after taking it for a week?

A 250 ml ng Mangosteen Superblend costs Php 440.00 Pesos (approximately $8.80). Based on the label, the Mangosteen Superblend contains 40% ng Mangosteen Puree, Noni juice na 30% at Carica juice na 30%. It should be taken 1 tablespoon before breakfast. Repeat if needed in mid-afternoon and before going to bed.

Yung Carica Noni Juice and Fruit Extract na 120 ml is Php 165.00 Pesos (approximately $3.30). 50% daw is Noni juice, Grape juice is 30%, Berry extract is 15% at Pineapple juice 5%. Ahhh…kaya pala mas maasim ito. It should be taken 1-2 Tablespoons a day on an empty stomach.

Siguro dapat isama rin ng Carica ang training for their franchisees and their staff para mas effective sila in recommending their products. Kasi alam ko magaganda naman ang products nila eh kaya internal staff training will go a long long way. Para sana mas may uniformity dapat magkaroon sila ng exhaustive training for all their personnel and staff para iisa ang sagot. Anyway, that is on the operations and management side na eh.

Carica herbal products have herbal soaps (some of it, I tried na like the herbal white soaps) and Carica shampoo, Herbal dental care toothpaste which I all like naman. Cost is no more than 200 pesos (approximately $4.00). I have a blog about Soaps, Bathing and Lush Soaps at this link http://yunesa.blogspot.com/2009/08/soap-opera-consumer-review.html

I bought both products sa Sonsea herbal shop ng Carica sa SM Fairview. This is where I normally buy any Carica products. Their marketing office is located at 2628 Dian st. corner Buendia in Makati City with telephone number 5218783 or 5235603. You can email them at caricaphil@yahoo.com and website at http://www.caricaworldwide.com.ph/

The Soap Opera Bath Shop Consumer Review
By
Eunice Estipona

We had a heavy snow storm the night before and the next winter morning, I was happily approaching the front desk of the hotel where I was working that time as a spa manager with my hair all wet from my usual daily bathing routine before going to work. In the Philippines, it’s common to see Filipinas walking around the streets with our hair still wet or should I say damp. Anyway, it was around 10:00 o’clock in the morning and the receptionist on duty that time looked at me with a querying eye and as I approached her, without hesitation she asked “Eunice, why is your hair wet?” to which I answered abruptly “Ohhh, everyday we Filipinas used to take a bath morning and evening before going to bed” and I think I shocked her because she covered her pretty red lips (which were now widely open) with her hand and replied with an endearing tone, “Ohh crazy Filipina!” The conversations that followed were: “No, bathing is already a part of our culture, why? how often do you take a bath?” to which the concierge replied that “we take a bath only twice a week depending on the climate”. I was pretty stunned I can feel my eyes widen and my jaw dropped but soon realized that bathing in itself is also a cultural thing. Filipinos are known to take a bath everyday and shower by night (At least in general). Americans are known to take a shower everyday before going to work. When Americans say they took a shower, it means they took a bath. Bathing and showering for them is the same while for Filipinos bathing and showering are two different things. For Filipinos, bathing means whole body cleaning, including shampoo, conditioner and scrubbing (hilod) while if a Filipino says “to shower” it means whole body cleaning EXCLUDING the hair. Again, we have to accept our diversities. But suffice to say, Filipinos love bathing and water. Kaya nga hit na hit sa atin yung maligo sa ulan kasi we love water, usong uso rin yung mga spa eh kasi it offers water therapies and we are blessed to have plenty of those surrounding our 7,100 ++ wonderfully crafted islands. So in this regard, I will start blogging about my bathing experience using soaps that I bought from Soap Opera in comparison with other soaps that I have used na.

The first product that I am going to blog about was the one I bought last July 2009 at their SM Fairview branch 2/F right in front of the Watson’s Personal Care store was just accidental. I was really looking for a soap that will effectively remove my blemish on my arms (if there is one) kasi nga a few months ago I scratched my arms but unfortunately whenever I itch from insect bites and scratch myself hay naku…..I do not stop until it bleeds. Hehehe… According to the sales personnel the Power Whitening Glutathione, which smells like their body scrub is good for blemishes daw. She demonstrated pa nga how the body scrub affects my skin by trying it on my hand. Unfortunately, I am still using another brand that I bought from Rustan’s. Maybe next time, I said to her. I was there just to try out if there is really a soap that can take away these small spots. According to the soap’s label, the power whitening contains Glutathione and Arbutin bath soap, a powerful and healthy skin lightener with age reducing agents. Cost is one hundred and fifty pesos (Php 150.00 or approximately $3.00) for a 110 grams sabi ng label (according to the label). It’s color white and it smells really refreshing eh pag ako pa naman naliligo at gusto kong mag bleach, I spend no less than 10 minutes of “affair” with my Loofah and soap. I cannot compare or describe how it smells but it smells nice like a combination of flowers. You see, bathing is a luxurious treat for me too! It’s kinda like a therapy kasi nga sa smell pa lang very refreshing na. I always look for a soap that smells good like an Aromacology or aromatherapy. Something that would tickle my nasal sensitivities. Yung para bang as if nasa spa ka. Hay sarap! Come to think of it, the Lord has given us the sense of smell and touch to be enjoyed altogether. We are refreshed and rejuvenated by the sense of smell but we also get sick pag hindi maganda yung naaamoy natin na puro chemicals di ba? Or mabahong amoy. I love trying different types of products in the market especially the natural soaps. But I do not buy (rarely if ever) yung mga soaps na walang amoy kasi nga ang prinsipiyo ko is that dapat you smell nice (but not too strong) once you get out of the shower. Unlike the natural soaps that I tried sa Lush! Which I buy from Greenbelt in Makati I noticed, that Lush’s soaps are very soft soaps especially when wet and therefore mas madaling matunaw. The last time I bought from them was several months ago kasi nga malayo at hindi naman ako madalas sa Makati area. But whenever I go within the Makati district especially Greenbelt, I would drop by the Lush! Branch in Greenbelt. But I noticed that although I both like the soaps of Soap Opera and Lush, Soap Opera’s soaps are harder and less expensive. Therefore, if you are looking for a lower-priced item and alternative Soap Opera will give you more value for your money. As a critic sometimes I cannot help but compare. But do not get me wrong, Lush soaps although more expensive are also okay if you have the budget for it.

According to their website http://www.soapoperabathshop.com/ , this Glutathione and Arbutin pure ingredient Bath Soap, gives a safe and double-powered whitening action. Enriched with super powerful & widely acclaimed whitening ingredients for a smoother and younger looking skin. Naturally takes out age spots. My question is how many days or months do I need to use the soap for me to see the effects? And how long per bath? As Science reveals that Glutathione tablets are effective only when taken for more than 30 days consecutively depending on your skin tone. So the darker your skin is, the longer you have to wait for the Glutathione to take effect. It takes time and maraming babaran sa banyo.

Based on my experience with this soap, it has really lightened my scratches but you need to spend 15 minutes a day scratching the suds of the soap using a Loofa. What I normally do is cut the soap in two equal portions and use one half at a time. I already finished the whole soap which lasted for approximately 10 days of consecutive daily twice a day bathing. To compute to your monthly expenses using Soap Opera’s soaps, you will be consuming three bars of 110 grams of soap (their regular size) a month and it will cost you 450 pesos (approximately $9.00) for the thirty days. Take note that this will vary widely on how often you use it, for how long per bath and how many people would use it in the household. Siyempre mas marami kayong gagamit mas madaling maubos.

Then I also bought the soap called The Bomb but have just used it today. This soap is a clear soap with light green color, it also weighs approximately 110 grams and contains Glutathione, Vitamin C, Calamansi Placenta and Collagen. According to the label, this soap, The Bomb has strong skin whitening agents which smoothens skin and erases blemishes. It has effective anti-aging effects. It costs Php 150.00 pesos (approximately $3.00). It smells like one of the Skittles candies. Feels like mint. Very soothing to the senses. I will certainly buy another bar of this soap kasi very minty yung feeling and smell niya. You might want to taste it (but don’t). Hahaha…. Come to think of it are there any edible soaps out there? I heard that there are, shoot me an email or send me a note where I can buy edible soaps. I want to try it out. Please…….

I also bought the soap called Bedazzled containing Glutathione, Hyaluronic Acid and Oxygen (puwede na pala na ilagay sa soap ang oxygen in what form kaya, kasi ang alam ko ang Oxygen is in its gaseous state, is it possible to mix gas and solid? Hummm….I wonder if their claim is really true.). It’s another clear soap, flesh in color, approximately 110 grams and costs 150.00 (approximately $3.00) pesos. It says in its label that it combats the visible signs of aging by nourishing your skin and takes away fine lines and wrinkles through its advance age-defying action. Brightens your skin tone (?). Itong claim na ito, I placed a question mark after it because is there such thing as brightening a skin tone or in Tagalog language pagpapa-tingkad ng kulay ng balat? Hum…..I think they should start editing what they print on their labels as I noticed halos pareho lang ingredients ng lahat ng nabili kong soaps, Anyway, I will not be able to say something other than it smells like a toilet fragrance and when its wet and applied all over the body nawawala na yung amoy.

Important tip: You have to ask which soaps are offered on sale and try them out first. Instead of 150.00 Pesos ($3.00) they just sell it for 100 pesos each (approximately $2.00). Still way more expensive than the usual Dove soaps in the supermarket. Speaking of Dove soap, what I don’t like about Dove is the greasy after feel when I use them but then again it’s my personal preference I like the squeaky clean feeling after a bath. I do not like to feel oily after bathing that is why I was glad when they came out with several Dove variants like the Fresh energizing beauty bar with lemon grass where only light moisturizing lotion were added with beads and a sparkling scent of grapefruit and lemongrass. I am using it from time to time and it doesn’t feel greasy or too oily. But then again, Dove soaps are good for those skin types which need to be moisturized and for people who would like a lotion after-feel without having to apply lotion. It’s also a soft soap so don’t let it stay soaked.

Bath Shops of Soap Opera are located in a few SM malls in Metro Manila including SM Fairview, Megamall, SM North EDSA, SM Marikina and Market! Market!.

Overall rating for Soap Opera 89%, Lush! 85% and Dove 83%.

Before I end this consumer review some words of wisdom regarding bathing: Bathing experts reveal that the right way to take a bath is for at least 20 (twenty) minutes (minimum), you must either soak or read in the bathroom, but should not begin the rinsing process until that period of time has elapsed. Slow baths are definitely advised, hurried baths will leave you soar and irritable. But be careful not to stay in the bath past the point at which you become noticeably pruney or otherwise known as water-aging (ito yung nag kukulubot na yung skin ng fingers mo parang pasas hindi ubas), this diminishes the experience. And last but not the least, do not let anything interrupt your bathing experience.

Happy bathing!

CONSUMER REVIEW GUIDELINES ON SPA, MASSAGE, BEAUTY AND WELLNESS PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
yunesa@yahoo.com

Today I will start blogging about my spa, massage clinics, facial centers and wellness center experiences (which I should have done a long time ago as I love hopping to these types of establishments, attending similar events or trying products bought here and there) Aside from my healthy food craving, ito ang bisyo ko…hehehe. Trying out this and that product, going to conventions, seminars and going to this and that establishment to have my massage and other wellness regimen and siyempre- spa hopping. Come to think about it, I should have done this a long time ago but this is the first time I am going to blog about my “real life” experiences from products and services so I would like to invite you to start blogging your heart out with me. Anything that I think might be worth mentioning, I will write it here. Events (including, but is not limited to: seminars, workshops, boot camps, meetups, meetings, conventions, trade shows, fairs, etc.) products, services related to Spa, Massage, Beauty, Wellness and Well-Being review and blog it here.

But first, I have to form rules or guidelines (and yes, I will personally abide by them) on reviewing business establishments and products in the wonderful world related to spa, massage, beauty and wellness. I will write from what I have experienced and not a second hand story. I would like to stress first and foremost that I am not endorsing any business establishment, that all these are based on my personal experience and that I am speaking as a consumer. I uphold my right as a consumer and that I am reviewing for informational purposes only and not to endorse any product or service. That I paid for the services rendered to me (or to us, as the case maybe) so my views are not tainted by any commercial interest but honest to goodness event, product and service reviews focusing on anything related to Spa, Massage, Beauty and Wellness Review (with a focus on the Philippines). I have also taken the liberty to take more time to write a truthful and efficient product and service review rather than those sketchy, brief ones that we are used to reading. I will write BOTH positives and negatives about the product, service, or company. Reviews are thorough and independent. I do not take freebies, cash or gifts in exchange for the positive coverage so you can be sure that the advice and reviews are impartial. Being also a critic, reviewer, resource and information guide, I do not research using just the internet, phone or from hearsay. I personally visit and try out these products and services. I take pride in getting all the details right and telling it how it is. So I would also like to welcome everyone to react, give their comments and opinions about the product, service or company I am reviewing as long as they also will abide to these guidelines. Please keep in mind that you are reviewing the businesses that are the livelihoods of real people, instead of a faceless corporation. Remember, there is a difference between writing a negative experience and writing a rant. We would rather be informed of the former and not the latter. So always be level-headed in your reviews, do not use foul language and be civil.

What I would like to accomplish is to let people know what it feels being there or trying that product or service. I will write (if it’s worth mentioning) about the ambiance, the staff, the cleanliness, the location, etc. to give more information on what is not listed in the brochure or website, to help management and those behind the product or owners of the establishment to improve their service or make them proactive and do something better. This blog for consumer reviews will not be a part of any reviews para lang siraan (not a tirade) ang isang product, service or isang establishment. Even if I encounter a service that is awful or product that is not good- I will not throw the baby out of the bath water and instead will try it again at another time. So I can amend my reviews- for better or for worseJ.

Some reminders for those who would like to comment or post their reviews and I would like to take every effort (whatever is humanly possible) to ensure that reviews which are posted on this site are accurate, non-fraudulent and of a reliable nature. I will not tolerate or accept:
Fake Reviews
Reviews written by spa owners, product manufacturers and producers posing as spa customers, clients, guests and visitors
Reviews exposing rumors or hearsay
Reviews being written based on spa incentives or any form of compensation
Reviews written of an irrelevant or personally insulting nature
New reviews for spas that were visited more than 2 years ago
Reviews containing any promotional material of any kind
Reviews written by anonymous persons (all we need is a valid email address and your full name)
Reviews submitted with a fake e-mail address
Please note that the reviews posted on this blog are based on individual subjective opinions. The opinions expressed by visitors are not the views held by myself. I do not agree with or confirm any of the opinions expressed by any visitor reviews or any reactions and responses made to the reviews. I can remove any review or response at any time if necessary to maintain the integrity of the site. If in the rare case that I find a fake review, it will not be submitted or it will be removed immediately. Please note that if a spa owner, manufacturer, marketer is found submitting their own spa review, the spa will be penalized by being warned and in repeated instances, will be barred from posting again. A note will also be displayed on the spa review section mentioning that a fake review was submitted by this individual or company. Please note that an owner, an establishment or whoever from management is able to post a response back in reply to any bad reviews mentioned on the site and be pro-active. As long as peaceful communications and non-derogatory remarks are omitted- I hope everyone will be open for improvement. A neutral and fair review is critical to both of these objectives. Resist the urge to be sarcastic, rude or overly critical.

Finally, I am not responsible for the accuracy of the information contained in my reviews because they might change their rates/price and offer promotions, they might also change their services and products without due notice- so as much as I wanted to be accurate and precise at the same time, I cannot guarantee that my visit, reviews and blogs about the products and services will be the same with what you might or have experienced. As far as I am concerned, I am reviewing on my point of view as a consumer and based solely on my own personal experience and we should continue to do so without any personal biases. Therefore I cannot be liable in anyway for the information contained herein.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us- hopefully, we can give relevant information and help both the consumers and management in raising the bar of excellence in this wonderful and exciting industry.

Peace be with you!

Eunice

Everybody’s Meetup: Dito Po sa Atin
By yunesa

It is wonderful to find people with similar likes and interests. It is more wonderful to be able to meetup or meet eye to eye individuals whom you have exchanged emails with and communicate only via text, YM and online. Napakabuti na nagsasama-sama, nagkakatipo-tipon at nagkakaroon tayo ng pagdadaupang-palad especially during meetups. Bakit ba kailangang may mga organisasyon? May mga asosasyon? May mga committees? May mga pagsasama-sama? May mga teams? May mga groups? May mga meetups? Dahil lang ba wala tayong magawa? Or we need to show off to others? For popularity’s sake? To promote our products and services lang ba? Bakit may meetup? Bakit usong-uso ang mga social networking even online? Merong Friendster. Merong Multiply. May Twitter. Yahoo Groups. Facebook. MySpace. At marami pang iba. When we join any kind of group, bear in mind that we are joining to contribute to a larger view and context than us. Hindi lang para makapag-promote ng business or i-advance ang ating career but ang pangunahing layunin ng bawat pag join natin sa isang group or even meetup ay para tulungan ang industry where we are involved at tulungan ang mga taong may mga katanungan at pasanin in the area involved. For example, kung may gusto tayong itanong or help regarding spa, massage, wellness or even in the realm of business and entrepreneurship- walang tinatanggihan o kinakampihan ang meet-up maliban na lang kung may mga masasamang elemento na gustong mag-promote ng hatred, violence or any business or product that involves something na hindi naman nakakabuti sa general health at environment. We are non-partisan. Hindi tayo nag jo-join para manggulo instead, we are joining because we want to help or receive help and learn from others. We should engage in a group to give relief, care and shelter. Hindi yung habang lamalaki at lumalawak eh nagiging mapanghusga, mapagmapuri at mapagmataas ang group. We need a revolutionary approach to helping and learning from each other. Dapat everything that we do eh yung nagtuturo tayo ng bagong pag-asa, pagbabagong-loob at pag-iisip. We do not need too much fighting, quarreling and division amongst ourselves kasi there is too much war going on sa mundo natin at palagay niyo ba na wise maki-halo pa tayo sa ganun? Almost nothing will sap your energy and passion faster than being with people you do not trust or respect or do not trust you or respect you in return. Enduring a place with toxic relationship is truly suicide and no one will care when you need help or start to go down. Nakakapagod yung ganung relationship. But a group that connects you with people you genuinely like, respect and admire is an enormous gift. A group like this will push you further and inspire you to be your best. Meron din one way or the other. We affect each other directly man or indirectly. Like attracts like remember? Kaya nga we should bless instead of curse kasi nga yung masamang sinasabi natin regarding a person ay bumabalik din sa atin. We should forgive kasi hindi natin alam kung kelan tayo naman ang mangangailangan ng forgiveness. We should love even those people who are un-loveable and those who do not deserve it. Mahirap gawin pero yun ang dapat gawin.

Of course, the truth is, we cannot please everybody. We cannot address every issue or concerns of everybody, siyempre, we are humans. Marami pa talagang dapat i-improve at gawin. I-ju-judge pa natin at tutuligsain. No back-stabbing, nasty gossip or mind games involved. Merong mapayapang relasyon na dapat maging modelong relasyon ng bawat isa online and offline. Of course everyone has different styles, methodologies at different personalities but we should accept our differences. Basta hindi lang yung nakakasira sa kapwa at dapat hindi nakakasira sa general peace and order of the group. I am grateful for everyone because 99% of the time, every time na aalis ng meetup ang bawat isa ang bunga nun is magaan ang loob at naging masaya, mapayapa, tahimik at panatag dahil lahat naman tayo gusto ng payapang buhay at pakikipagkaibigan.

You will find different people of various persuasions in diverse places especially online. Different personalities. Different characters. How do you deal with each one? Some suggestions:
People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered. Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of having hidden agenda. Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest people with the smallest minds, think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but only follow top dogs. Fight for some underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed over night. Build anyway.

Walang patakarang pagtanggap as long as “tao” kang mag-join, alam mo at least mag email at gusto mong mag-add ng value to the lives of others. You are most welcome. Walang outcast. Even if you cannot afford to attend a meetup, as long as there is a sponsor, pwede ka naman mag-attend. Walang hinaharang sa pinto. Nung mga unang mga meetup nga lahat yun for free but we would like people also to take responsibility for their learning and experience kaya we are charging nominal fees na. Up to now, we do not charge anything to join online. We support other similar groups that are sensible, ethical and moral and follow government rules and regulations. We support individuals who are doing business responsibly. We have to see to it that everybody is adding to the value of one another. We are not too strict or stringent. As much as possible it should be between the two of them only. It’s their own private matter. Whether that be a personal or professional issue. Somehow in these times of fleeting relationships and false friendships, everything has been reduced to the bottom line of winning. It has stopped being about new ideas to create camaraderie, to help people and has taken on the identity of winning at the cost of impugning anyone not on our side. Dapat laging mas mahalaga ang future kaya hindi dapat na mag-away at magkaroon ng division because the world is small. Why will you want to hurt someone if you will also hurt yourself in the process? One way or the other, magkikita-kita rin tayo- eh anong gagawin natin pag ganun ang nangyari? Magiiwasan? Life is short to waste on too much politicking and back-biting. Ang liit-liit kaya ng mundo. On the other hand, tama na siguro yung pagtanggap ng pagkakamali and surrender ourselves to restoration. Laging mas mahalaga yung darating pa at may pag-asa pa.

Some parts of our mission here on Earth are shared by all human beings. Example, we were sent here to bring in more gratitude, more kindness, forgiveness and more love into the world. We share this mission with each other because the task is too large to be accomplished by just one individual.

When joining any meetup or any group for that matter, we become accountable to people other than ourselves. Ang meetup ay parang basketball at volleyball. Meetup is a team sport- it has always been. No one particular person even myself is a hero, because everybody is. Walang hero dito. You are the hero here at meetup hindi ako. Ako lang ang taga-organize. YOU compose meetup. This is not my group. This is your group, your team, your family. Tayong lahat ay both kapamilya at kapuso. Hehehe……Divorce and annulment is not an option. Dahil marami pa tayong dapat i-accomplish, dapat i-improve, dapat bigyan ng pansin at dapat gawin, we are not interested in politicking but in helping increase your value, everyone’s value whether that means through a meetup under the tree, inside the mall, a lunch or through seminars and workshops. With this being said, I am sharing an email forwarded to me by my good friend and colleague Brian Stone, from NY regarding the Five lessons to make you think about the way we treat people. 1 – First Important Lesson – The Cleaning Lady.During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz.. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:’What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?’Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times.. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. ‘Absolutely,’ said the professor.. ‘In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ‘hello.’I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy. 2. – Second Important Lesson – Who’s whoOne night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride.Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 60s.. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached..It read:’Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband’s bedside just before he passed away…. God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.’Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole. 3 – Third Important Lesson – Always remember those who serve. In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.’How much is an ice cream sundae?’ he asked.’Fifty cents,’ replied the waitress. The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.’Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?’ he inquired.By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.’Thirty-five cents,’ she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins.’I’ll have the plain ice cream,’ he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies… You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.4 – Fourth Important Lesson. – The obstacle in Our Path.In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand!Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition. 5 – Fifth Important Lesson – Giving When it Counts… Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, ‘Yes I’ll do it if it will save her.’ As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then hisface grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, ‘Will I start to die right away?’.Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister ALL of his blood in order to save her but he had chosen to save her anyway.’Work like you don’t need the money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody’s watching.’ In the book, “Only the Real Matters”, by Francis Kong (p. 163) he said that in the US, “immigrants from other Asian countries have prospered because of the creation of their business federations and chambers. Groups like the American and Japanese Chambers of Commerce with its Korean and Chinese counterparts have sought the improvements of the lives of their overseas workers who, in turn, are committed to their organizations. What about the Filipino community? According to his story, it was observed by his friend that, every time three Filipinos gathered together, there would be five varying opinions. Debates and arguments would ensue and there would never be any agreements. Nothing would be resolved. Everybody wants to be the leader and only a few want to be followers. Little wonder the Filipinos in America, one of the biggest and most talented minorities, have hardly made a dent. They have so much, yet accomplished so little. Today, we see the Chinese own the food and noodle shops, the Koreans own the grocery shops; the Japanese own the electronics shop; and the Filipinos shop in all these shops.”

This story of our countrymen in America is tragic but it need not happen to us. We really have to put an end to this. In Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfishness or empty conceit, but consider others better than yourself and regard each other as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own interests, but also for the interests of others. The bottom-line is to exemplify ang halimbawa ng Diyos, ang kanyang standards at katuruan even in our careers and relationships with people. We should all be better NOT bitter- dito po sa atin. This is the way we do things here at meetup. This is the way we are.

After the melamine scare we have naman a peanut butter scare. Naku lagi pa naman akong bumibili noon ng Ludy’s but switched brands more than two years ago. Salmonella Typhimurium ang na recover sa mga peanut butter ng Texas and since then it spread also like wild fire sa ating mga products na meron din palang Salmonella. Ewwww….sad…sad…sad….

Ang Salmonella typhimurium ay isang klase ng bacteria na mabilis mag multiply sa gastrointestinal tract ng maraming animal species where it usually causes no disease, but sa humans its growth causes gastroenteritis. Six to 48 hours after ingestion of contaminated water or food (usually poultry or beef) and in this case mga peanut butter, Maguumpisa ito sa nausea and vomiting (pagsusuka), often followed by diarrhea (pagdumi ng madalas). Sa mga healthy adults the disease is usually self-limiting with good medical care, but it is more serious sa younger generations, the old, and those with underlying medical conditions; the case-fatality ratio can be as high as 5-10% in nurseries and nursing homes. Isolations of Salmonella causing gastroenteritis in humans have increased in recent years in developed countries, primarily because modern methods of animal husbandry, food preparation, and distribution encourage the spread of Salmonella.

So be safe……refrain muna tayo from eating peanut butters anyway I think na pull out na sa market yung mga suspected peanut butters so fasting muna sa mga peanut butter and instead coconut jam muna tayo…….

On to more cheerful things…..Ang dami palang celebrities that are into the wellness business? I found out about the following:
Tessa Prieto-Valdes is into franchising Urban Spa
The former Zamboanga del Norte lawmaker Jalosjos who was recetly freed has a spa and wellness center inside the National Bilibid Prison compound

Some famous Filipino celebrities are also into the salon industry and these includes:
Fanny Serrano- Fanny Serrano Salon; Rev’lation
Drew Arellano- Grupo Barbero
Arnel Ignacio- Creative Hair Systems
Vina Morales- Ystilo

The Beauty Industry is also another business ventures that celebrities are getting into:
Cristalle Henares- Belo Essentials
Vicki Belo- Belo Medical Group and Belo Essentials
Joyce Jimenez- Private Joyce

Plus there are a lot of Philippine celebrities endorsing wellness including Marianne Rivera and Piolo Pascual are endorsing Blue Water Spa. Manny Pacquiao was also at the recent unveiling of the Philippine Oncology Center Corporation (POCC), The Philippine Oncology Center Corporation (POCC) aims to provide the highest quality and affordable health care services in the spirit of equality to promote wellness and relieve suffering. POCC is located at the Basement, Marian Medical Arts Building, Dahlia St. West Fairview, Quezon City with tel. nos. 935-8946 to 49. KC Concepcion who was recetly featured as the cover girl for Women’s Health magazine advocating wellness.

Sabi nga nila na ang business of health and wellness will not be much affected by the economic turmoil, if you know what and how to do things in this industry of course. The Department of Tourism (DOT) endorsed more than P20 million worth of tourism-related investments for 2009 that are expected to generate some 3,000 jobs for Filipinos.
Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said these investments will also create more than 2,000 rooms, boosting efforts to promote tourism.
The tourism projects include nine resorts, six hotels, two theme parts and one condotel or condominium-hotel.
Durano added that for the first quarter, the establishments that opened were Park Bed & Breakfast Hotel and Restaurant (48 rooms) in Pasay; Sugihara Villa Resort, Vauban Villa Resort, Salamanca Villa Resort, Almonavides Villa Resort, La Galice Villa Resort, Kapangyarihan Villa Resort, and La Pucelle Villa Resort-Amanpulo group in Pamalican Island, Palawan (28 cluster villas); Oakwood Serviced Residences (232 rooms) in Pasig; Imperial Palace Water Park Resort and Spa (616 rooms) in Cebu; and Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa (217 rooms).
To open in the coming months are Discovery Bay Misibis, Manila Ocean Park (additional facilities), Picasso Serviced Residences, Newport Marriot Hotel, Maxim’s Hotel, Microtel Inns and Suite Puerto Princesa, and Silang Wakeboard Park.
At present, the DOT is processing the investment of Bella Roca Island Resort and Spa in Marinduque. You should see this place, its a Moroccan inspired place, napaka ganda.
According to DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque Jr., the jobs that will be generated from the projects is seen to augment the rise in unemployment in these challenging times. As a policy, tourism-related businesses can apply for income tax holiday for four to six years and duty-free importation of selected capital equipment needed for the operation upon registration with the Bureau of Investments. With this being said, there is a lot of money pouring in huh?

I believe that this is just a bump in the road and that things will get better. Just observe malls and shopping areas especially during a sale, who says the Philippines is a third world country and that we are experiencing hard times? Well, jokingly, as some say about this economic hardships, “sorry, we are not participating”. Truly, we are an optimistic and resilient breed.

Client, Patient, Customer, At Iba Pa
Masseur, Massagist, Massage Therapist, At Iba Pa
By yunesa@yahoo.com
(you can view, read, download and print this article for free, see below for details)

Client, customer, guest, patient, patron……ano ba talaga kuya? (You know, I really don’t know what to really call them) So, for me to sound politically correct we will dissect the words. (Sometimes this has been a topic of discussions, hasn’t it?).

Let us differentiate a client, from a customer, to a guest, patient or patron. I am writing here with the focus of how the terms are used from the viewpoint of someone in the spa, massage therapy, bodyworks, beauty and wellness industry. Remember I am writing here not to be politically correct but to present each and every word within the context of how we view it in our industry and how it is perceived and used by others in different fields.

According to several online dictionaries that I have compared, a client is someone who uses and pays a professional or a specialist for goods or services. So if a person is not a professional this means the person seeking his/her goods or services is not technically a client? Ganun ba yun? (Is that it?) So let us say for example you are not really a professional spa or massage therapist, you don’t have the right to call your clients…clients? Normally, the word client is heard in a lawyer’s, solicitor’s, accountant’s, advertising agency’s office, etc.. But in the spa, massage, beauty and wellness industry we have also been using this term instead of the perennially hated word “customer”.

Let us go to the word customer. A customer on the other hand, is an informal word that refers to an individual buys/ pays for goods or services. Commonly this term is used in the retail industry. Because the word customer, has been tainted badly by people who promote sex other than purely professional massage therapy. People in the industry have been embarrassed to use this and instead used other terms which will not create stigma for the professionals. So kung wala namang bibilhin na product sa spa ang isang tao, dapat huwag siyang tawaging customer or if you cringe when you hear that word from fellow massage/ spa therapists then do not use “customer” at all.

Guest is a term used to refer to any individual or visitor who received hospitality from a home or a business entity. Generally, this is used in the hotel industry or any facility whose business is in accommodation, travel, holiday and tours industry. To be too technical about the term, in the spa, massage clinic or your wellness business, you can use the word guest if:
1. They are not regular visitors, meaning, to be technical about it, guest lang talaga sila. They do not come often.
2. You and your staff are really giving them the best service and value. What do I mean by this? How do we treat guests in our homes? I think the best example of treating guests is in the abode of Filipino homes. We treat them with utmost respect, honor, full-hospitality and accommodation. There are even times when the master’s bedroom is offered for the guests. We would tour them around even if that means being absent from the office or taking a half-day off. We would eat out with them from our own pocket and at our own expense not theirs, at marami pang iba. In short, they are treated as royalties and a distinguished part of the family.
3. To be again too technical about the term guest, guests are guests and they are not expected to pay. Naku! Hindi yata maganda ‘to…. if we are to be too technical about this term sa business natin…ang guest ay hindi natin ine-expect na mag-bayad. (Whew! This is not good because if we are too be too technical about this term, in our line of business, do you expect your guest at home to pay? Of course not, isn’t it? ) A guest is not expected to pay (?).
So again, we will have another technical issue if we are to use that term.)

Let us go to the word patient or pasiyente in Tagalog. The word patient is generally used in the health and medical field naman because this is a person who requires medical care. So if you are in the premises of a medical setting, you are called a patient. Likewise, this term might be used also as an adjective meaning, someone who is fore bearing and one who embodies long-suffering or briefly, a patient is someone who endures. In Tagalog, mapagpasensiya. Which is correct in its context because when you are a patient, you are enduring some trying circumstances or situations. An ailment, disease or sickness. Before, the word patient is exclusively used by doctors, physicians but medical spas nowadays, use the word patient even if you do not have any illness, as long as you are in their premises and a receiver of their services they can call you a patient instead of client, guest, customer or patron. The word patient hooked two similar yet different denotations and connotations.

Last but not the least, the word, patron. The word patron means someone who is a regular individual who champions your business and some one who defends you. This person recommends you and your spa services. Patron is generally used by artists, in the restaurant, service industry or any institution where repeat business is high. The meaning of this in a technical concept, is wonderful because we really want people like these who are loyal and zealous of what we do and what we provide for them.

Before I end this brouhaha over these terminologies there is another set of terms that has been a controversy in the realm of spa, massage therapy and bodyworks. And these are the words: masseuse/masseur, massagist, massage therapist and bodyworkers.
Obviously a masseuse is a female and a masseur is a male, both of which professionally practices massage therapy as a source of income. Again, since these words have given some form of stigma for the professionals because of its other implied meaning regarding sex.

Massagist, is a neutral term, which may mean a female or a male, a term I have not found in the Webster’s dictionary but I have first encountered in Chapter XIII of PD 856 which is the Implementing Rules and Regulations for Massage Clinics and Sauna Bath Establishments of the Code of Sanitation of the Philippines, Section 2, Item Number 10 on the Definition of Terms, massagist refers to a trained person who has passed the masseurs examination and is a holder of a valid certificate of registration for masseur issued by the Department of Health. The word massage therapist has not been mentioned in the Implementing Rules and Regulations for Massage Clinics and Sauna Bath Establishments of the Code of Sanitation of the Philippines but has been mentioned in the Rules and Regulations of the Department of Tourism (DOT) governing the establishment of spa facilities. The DOT defines a massage therapist as someone who is a certified licensed massage therapist who has undergone extensive training either locally or internationally regarding anatomy, physiology and multitude of massage techniques.

Bodyworker may mean someone who is making or repairing vehicle bodies or someone who is engaged in the profession of bodywork. Bodywork is a broader concept than massage therapy because bodyworkers may include other forms of somatic bodyworks not only massage therapy and this includes: Yoga, Rolfing, Alexander technique, etc. Sometimes massage therapy and bodyworks are used interchangeably but to be technical about it, while bodywork includes all forms of massage techniques, it also includes many other types of touch and healing therapies that additionally incorporate vast assessment techniques and tools that may for example, allow a client to benefit their posture and/or aim to enhance their awareness of the ‘mind-body connection’. Any activity which involves touch, energetic stimulation or the application of pressure or vibration to tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, joints, tendons and ligaments may be termed bodywork.

So in my personal opinion, whatever word we use, whether that be: client, customer, guest, patient, patron or masseur, masseuse, massagist, massage therapist, bodyworkers or whatever upcoming terminology that may arise, the basic principle is we use terms with value and dignity. The issue here is about adding value to the industry. If you think, the term that you will use will add value to a person’s dignity or an industry’s dignity then by all means use it. But if, in the deepest recesses of your heart, you think that this term has become obsolete or needs some fresh new start then change it for your peace of mind.

We can argue on the uses of these words over and over or we can use any of these terms with malice or indignation or with love and respect. Remember, words are very powerful. God created the universe with words. Words became flesh. Words do become flesh.

Since I am not writing to be politically correct, as stated earlier, all definitions have been definitions found from different online and offline sources like dictionaries like Merriam Webster, thesaurus, Google, etc.

I will end this topic with a little twist to tickle our funny bones, but certainly not to degrade any language. Please bear with me.

After all these heated discussions and arguments which is right and which term is wrong, the English language is a crazy language and here are some of the reasons why: There is no egg in an eggplant, nor ham in hamburger. There is neither pine or apple in pineapple. French fries were not invented in France nor English muffins in England. Sweetmeats are candies, while sweetbreads, which are not sweet at all, are meat. There are a lot of paradoxes in the English language and we will find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a Guinea pig is neither a pig nor an animal from New Guinea. And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing? Hammers don’t ham and grocers don’t groce? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why then isn’t the plural of booth beeth? One goose, two geese. So one moose, two meese? Gets confusing….right?
Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? That you can comb through the annals of history but not a single annal? Or an anus? If a vegetarian ate vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Have running nose therefore they run? and feet that smell? Park on driveways and drive on parkways? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise guy and a wise man are opposites? How can overlook and oversea be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell in one day and cold as hell the other?
One has to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill a form by filling it out and in which an alarm clock goes off by going on.
As I quote Pastor Ed Lapiz, from the Special issue of Light Touch Magazine, vol. 8 number 3,Copyright 2004, Glad Tidings Publication “Filipinos are linguists. Put a Filipino in any city, any town around the world. Give him a few months or even weeks and he will speak the local language there. Filipinos are adept at learning and speaking languages. In fact, it is not uncommon for Filipinos to speak at least three: his dialect, Filipino, and English. Of course, a lot speak an added language, be it Chinese, Spanish or, if he works abroad, the language of his host country. In addition, Tagalog is not ‘sexist.’ While many “conscious” and “enlightened” people of today are just by now striving to be “politically correct” with their language and, in the process, bend to absurd depths in coining “gender sensitive” words, Tagalog has, since time immemorial, evolved gender-neutral words like asawa (husband or wife), anak (son or daughter), magulang (father or mother), kapatid (brother or sister), biyenan ( father-in-law or mother-in-law), manugang (son or daughter-in-law), bayani (hero or heroine), etc. Our languages and dialects are advanced and, indeed, sophisticated! It is no small wonder that Jose Rizal, the quintessential Filipino, spoke some twenty-two languages!”

English, Tagalog, Spanish, Norge, Nipponggo and all the other languages were invented by people and not by computers. Language is a blessing in the hands of responsible people. We can bless with words and we can curse with words. We can express our love with words or scar a person with words. Words can be used both as a positive influence and a negative one. Language embodies the creativity of the human race (which, of course, is not a race at all…ay sus!). That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. Any why, when I say I would wind up my watch it means I would start it and when I say, I would wind up this talk, I would end it.

May we always have words that are encouraging, helpful, nurturing and loving to everyone around us.

Mabuhay!
